Sawyer’s Newborn Session
Towards the beginning of the year, Brian and Samantha welcomed baby Sawyer into their home and started a brand new chapter in their lives. Here’s why this session turned out so amazing!
During newborn sessions, I typically favor a lifestyle feel to the images. Lifestyle images reflect a person’s life in a documentary style, similar to what you might see in a magazine.
As a mother, when I look back on my own images of my children, the images that are most important to me are the ones that help me to relive what it was like bringing a new baby home. When I look back, I see the chaos, the sleeplessness, the joy, as well as well as just how tiny my babies were in comparison to our home environment.
By choosing to document a newborn session I feel like this gives families a fantastic way to document the real, behind the scenes version of bringing their new baby home. Everything changes so quickly once a baby is born and it’s important to document as much possible before it starts fading away from memory.
Snuggle and Chill
The best part of a lifestyle newborn session is how relaxed and easy they are. Moms and dads are encouraged to snuggle and care for their baby, while I sit perch like a fly on the wall and watch the magic take place. These sessions are designed to give new moms plenty of time to feed and change their babies as the need arises and by keeping expectations low, newborn sessions are a wonderful way to bond with new parents.
Simple Session Prep Ideas
With simple prep ahead of time, a person’s own home can become a haven for creativity.
I was fortunate that Samantha’s home looked like it was professionally styled, so we didn’t need to do much to set up. However, beforehand, she turned up the temperature which helped to keep Sawyer warm and happy.
In typical homes, I ask that parents lightly pick up anything that might be too distracting, but to leave the rest. But don’t worry if your house doesn’t look magazine ready. If you’re anything like me, keeping a picked up home was my last priority after giving birth and I 100% understand where you’re at because I’ve been there too.
Samantha did a wonderful job following my suggestions for a neutral color palate. When choosing what to wear for newborn sessions, I encourage wearing white for a clean crisp look. Additionally, I also suggest that families find clothing that matches the style of their home so that their images don’t look out of place when they are displayed on the wall. For example, if your home is a cozy cottage beach style, it would be best to avoid neon oranges and pinks.
