Betty and Cordell are magical, but not just because of their love for all things Disney and Harry Potter.
Betty and Cordell started off their epic romance as arch enemies in middle school. Later, when the swell of middle school angst subsided, the two fell madly in love with one another during their sophmore year up until senior year when they decided to call it quits. After time spent apart, they realized that they were ready to try again and they have been inseparable ever since. Their love is fueled with Disney romance and magical adventures, so for our session, we decided to fulfill Betty’s life long dream of a “Little Mermaid” inspired session with bold, vibrant colors and a bohemian edge.
Admittedly, when we first discussed Betty’s dream session, I was nervous. We live in the middle of the desert with absolutely no water in sight. How the heck would we be able to recreate water? Luckily, before our session, my husband and I came across the most perfect little oasis in town. I’d like to tell you where it is. Really, but. But then I’d have to…Well, you know the rest 😉
Before their engagement session, we collaborated on a variety of mermaid inspired looks and I purchased a few different dresses to make sure that her session was exactly what she had been dreaming of when she first contacted me. However, we ended up using an outfit put together while on location. I find that it’s best to keep options open and flexible during sessions because you never know what could make for the most incredible set up.
When we arrived on location, my assistant Cassidy, Betty, Cordell and I waded through mud and muck to make it to the spot. I was very impressed with Betty and Cordell because without the slightest hesitation, they were ready to hop into the water and get started! After an assortment of adorable couple-esque poses, Betty and I headed into the river below us and began working on her beauty portraits. One of my favorite parts of my engagement sessions is the beauty portrait portion where we focus on the bride-to be and capture her “pre-marriage” self. These portraits become a reflection of the bride’s singular beauty before she becomes a wife and eventually a mother and transforms into a different type of beautiful. Even though it was terrifying, we both splashed around in the water and did our best not to slip on the slick rocks below. For much of the session, I was neck deep in water floating around hoping not to get caught away in the current! 🙂 Don’t believe me? Check out this video!
After their session, I asked Betty a few questions to find out more about her thoughts about her session.
What is your style? I.e Why did you choose your session style?
I would say that I have an eclectic style, a bit of bohemian (why I love nature and water) but I can be edgy at times too.
Why was it important for you to invest in photography? Do you have anything that you’d like to add?
It was important for us because we wanted to capture our journey towards our marriage so that in the future we can look back at these pictures and remember what it was like before we were Mr. And Mrs. Edmond. We had never had pictures taken of us before so we wanted to go all out.
Honestly, I would add that I (Cordell’s mainly along for the ride haha) had unrealistic expectations for my photos and you completely surpassed all of them with your passion and creativity for achieving what we wanted.
I would also add that you have a magic touch about you in that you made us feel special and beautiful and like complete royalty:)!
Betty and Cordell have booked KDR for several more sessions, so you can expect to see more of their pictures in the future. I can’t wait to see how their love changes and develops with their beautiful future. Congratulations you two, rascals! 🙂
