Yesterday, I received really exciting news. One of my all time favorite pictures won it’s first competition and award! “Life with Kids” Competition on ViewBug
As a photographer, I am always seeking to improve my skills. Usually, I practice my techniques on my baby-humans, who are usually always around me. Like right now for instance. As I type this, I have one small child under my desk attempting to lick my leg and the other is wearing a doctor’s coat letting me know that I am about to get a shot. Essentially, I have willing participants (usually) whenever I need them.
Because my children are, you know, mine, I can explore different types of “sessions” with them without them ever knowing it. Usually I whip out my camera when they are doing something super cute, or when they looking particularly moody. In this particular instance, my son and I were painting a big “Happy Birthday Daddy” banner and he was being especially ferocious. I was able to capture him as exactly what he was in that moment, a wild and mighty two-year old know-it-all kind of guy.
With this picture, I did very minimal editing because I wanted to keep the focus on the intensity of his facial expressions. Normally, I will edit out small imperfections (like whatever food was left behind on his face), but in this case I felt like it added something extra. I egged him on, so to speak, by having him “scare my camera” and clearly, he took his mission seriously.
The competition the I entered was titled, “Life with Kids” so, I really couldn’t find a better picture to enter. Having children is never picture perfect (see what I did there?), and it’s usually a balance between cowering in fear praying that you can figure out how to get the chocolate out of the carpet (please..please be chocolate) and praying that these moments don’t slip away too quickly. Viewbug competitions start of with thousands of submissions and then through a several month process are narrowed down into a smaller pool of hopefuls. After that pool has been narrowed down, the grand jury judge chooses the winner.
Although this picture has won several finalist positions and judge favorites on Viewbug.com , this was the first time it had won the entire contest. To be honest, I’m still in shock. But I’m thrilled that the judge of the competition Cameron Bishopp Davis (Editor-in-Chief of Click Magazine), liked my work enough to give it a win. When you put your heart and soul into your work, recognition really means so much.
If you’re curious about the other INCREDIBLE images that were selected in the top group of competitors, I definitely encourage you to check them out on Viewbug. The vision in each picture is astounding and definitely a treat for the eyes.
And since I have ALWAYS wanted to say it, now I can: Look mom, I’m an award winning photographer now! 🙂
